Ville de Bordeaux, Louis Dreyfus Armateurs

Décembre 2021

In December 2021, we installed our first ever Seawing system on board the ship Ville de Bordeaux. This project marks a turning point: Airseas becomes the first French company to deploy a vehicle propulsion technology on a large cargo ship.

In just a dozen hours, the Airseas team took advantage of a scheduled passage of the Ville de Bordeaux to the La Rochelle shipyards to install the deck machinery to launch the 500m² wing. This highly collaborative project allowed us to carry out important interface specification work, paving the way for ever faster and smoother installations in the future.

The ro-ro vessel Ville de Bordeaux – from Louis Dreyfus Armateurs – is typically used to transport A320 sections to the US. It links Saint-Nazaire and Mobile, Alabama, twice a month.

“We aim for safe, swift and sustainable installations. Thanks to the vital work done during these highly valuable experiments, we have made it possible. We are now exploring different scenarios, such as the development of technological hubs, to meet growing demand and the need for efficiency.”

‘K’ Line Program #1 – Cape Brolga vessel

December 2022

In 2019, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line), one of the world’s largest shipowners, confirmed an order for a first Seawing system, followed in December 2021 by a second, and then three more orders in July 2022, bringing to a total of five the number of its vessels destined to benefit from our automated technology.

Building on our trial on the Ville de Bordeaux, in December 2022, we installed a Seawing (series size) on the Cape Brolga, a Bulk Carrier built in 2021 under the Japanese flag and transiting between Japan and Australia. This first experience is shaping a promising future with the world’s 5th largest shipowner, who has already placed an option on 46 additional sails.

What about tomorrow?

With the maturity of its hardware and software infrastructure, we are in the process of serializing its solution. Scaling-up offers new horizons for shipowners. We are determined to support our partners by minimizing the impact on their commercial operations. This is possible thanks to the experiments underway, the rich feedback from experience and the increase in our industrial resources.

Future bound!
